Adventure Brits is a community-driven publication, and we love sharing the first-hand experiences of our readers. We welcome submissions of UK outdoor & adventure stories by novice newbies to professional writers.

To ensure consistency, quality, and relevance, we’ve crafted a series of guidelines for our contributors, below.

Although we’ll work with you on any edits, by following these guidelines, you’ll significantly improve the chances of your submission being published. Please read these guidelines before contacting us.

Content we’re after:

We’re open to most written topics in either a fully formed or concept format. However as we’re a niche publication, there are some specific topics and themes we’d like to see:

• A local focus: articles must be centred around the British outdoors, or be about a British person.
• Authentic experiences: We value genuine stories. Your writing must be 100% original and written by you, not AI. Share personal experiences, surprising discoveries, your expertise or the emotions the outdoors or your experience evoked in you.
• Sought after topics: we have some key areas of our website where new content would fit in nicely. They are:
  • Specific hikes/bike rides/running trails (a template for these will be provided)
  • Independent gear reviews
  • Wildlife encounters
  • Foraging & bushcraft
  • Camping
  • Water sports
  • Opinion pieces (especially by under represented people in the outdoor community)
  • Accessibility guides
  • Destination-focused, especially:
    • Cambridgeshire, Cumbria, Devon, Dorset, Northumberland, Northern Ireland, Hampshire, Wales, Yorkshire and Scotland
  • Epic adventures for our Adventurous People series

Content we’re not after:

• No news pieces (we have an in-house team managing news)
• No city guides, food or restaurant/cafe guides, or anything not specifically about the outdoors
• No AI generated content, humans only
• No interviews (if you would like us to interview you, or know someone who should be interviewed, instead use the interview nomination form here for our Adventurous People series)

OUR WRITING GUIDELINES:

Tone & Style:

• First person, story-like, opinionated, positive and inspiring
• Concise sentences
• Break up content with headings
• Paragraphs that offer value and have a purpose in the overall piece
• Richly descriptive, but avoiding cliches

Length (Word Count):

• Opinion pieces: 1,000+ words
• All other pieces: 1,500 – 5,000 words

Structuring Your Submission:

We will often provide a template for guidance, but typically articles should be structured as follows:

1. Introduction: Begin with a brief but attention-grabbing introduction setting the scene for your adventure or story.
2. Body: Detail your experiences, providing specifics about locations, activities, and personal insights. Think: when, where, how, what and why. Transport the reader through rich descriptions which may not only include sights, but also smells, tastes, sounds and touch. You must break this up with naturally placed headings.
3. Conclusion: Round off with a reflective ending, maybe sharing what you learnt, how you felt or recommendations for how others can follow in your footsteps.
4. Tips or FAQs: If appropriate, we love a short bullet pointed list of tips or FAQs about your activity, experience or the destination, to offer useful insights to the reader.

Inclusivity & Ethical Considerations:

• Our community is diverse. Please be inclusive in your writing and avoid any language that might be considered offensive or derogatory.
• Be respectful when describing local traditions, communities, and customs. Avoid stereotypes and generalisations.
• Promote sustainable and eco-friendly practices. Always encourage ‘Leave No Trace’ principles.
• We recommend you read our editorial standards.

Accuracy:

• If any part of your adventure was sponsored or involved partnerships (or if it’s your own business) disclose this transparently in your submission. This might be better as a paid partnership.
• Distinguish clearly between your personal opinions and factual information.
• Before submitting, take the time to proofread your content. Check for grammatical errors, verify all facts, and ensure that the overall submission flows coherently.

Rights & Permissions:

• By submitting your content, you grant Adventure Brits the right to use, edit, and distribute your content, including with any media partners, like MSN.
• You must own the rights for any accompanying media, or provide us with written permission from the license holder.
• You may be liable to pay any license fees or penalties incurred for images you submit without permission or a license.

What you’ll get in return:

1. A 50 word author biography which includes up to three social media links, and one link to your blog/personal website/portfolio homepage or book.
2. Your article published on MSN (DA94) containing your links, subject to MSN approval.
3. An in-content link to a non-competing blog post or article (strictly no business websites).
4. Tags on social media when we share your article(s).
5. An opportunity to join our Creator Hub for future paid article call-outs and other opportunities like press trips and freebies.
6. A big thank you from us and our readers!

(Note: a bio on our ‘About’ page is granted to regular writers, and who have 3+ published articles).

How to submit:

Thanks for making it this far! You can submit your final guest post outdoor blog or idea to us via this Google Form. We aim to respond to your submission within five business days. If we don’t, feel free to follow up.

Unfortunately we’re not able to publish articles if we don’t feel they are a good fit to our British outdoors theme.
